Random. Randomness. Randomosity? A fine ensō. In Zen art, an ensō is a circle hand-drawn in one or two uninhibited brushstrokes to express the Zen mind, which is associated with enlightenment, emptiness, freedom, and the state of no-mind.

 Random Shite For Today:

Dreams. Less than you need to know.

Image
Good morning. Your (suburban) hermit is here with another bunch of random items. I hope you passed a good night. Today's random items are about dreams. My own dreams tend to be fun. I've been retired long enough now that I no longer have those stressful 'work dreams,'

Gaugin's haircut. Marilyn Monroe impersonators. What is Jazz?

Random items for 15 JUNE 2026: My favorite Vincent Van Gogh selfie. CLICK HERE  for the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. No, I haven't been, but who knows? I'm not dead yet. I have seen a few Van Gogh paintings at various museums in the USA, and I caught a traveling Van Gogh exhibit a couple of decades ago in San Francisco. They're even more incredible up close; you can see he used MOUNDS of paint, they look like colorful little mountains.

Hair of the Donald. Iggy Pop rides. Hero dogs.

Friday morning in the world, you know, except for that International Dateline thing. On the other side of that it's either Thursday or Saturday, and that confuses me. I'm an old man, goddamnit.  Perhaps I should start again. Friday morning in my part of the world,  Northern California, where I have been a suburban hermit now for several years. As a young man I was an urban hermit. I had hermitages in San Francisco, Baltimore, Dallas, New Orleans and elsewhere. Just none in a cave or a hut like one might picture a hermit. I'm willing to do that, but I am an older fellow, and now lack both the time and energy to set it up. The urban hermitages of my youth were excellent, especially San Francisco. A brilliant main library, many used book stores, art house movies, no need for a car. Everything I owned fit into a footlocker and a duffel bag. Nice. Baltimore's main library was also a gas.  After my 7 or 8 years as an urban hermit I became a family man and a functioning rat in...

Generally speaking, I'm not a capitalist, but here's something where free Enterprise is kind of cool. Clean it up with the Donald S. Trump toilet brush. Buy one for each toilet.

Random things for a random existence.

Tuesday in The World. Let's get random.

Being a messenger. Pissing in Helsinki Harbor. Some rockabilly.

I was a bike messenger in San Francisco for a few years. After that I had a long career in radio; biking around The City was more fun. Except for the accidents. Broke my collarbone twice, broke my cheekbone, had a major concussion and post consussion something. Syndrome? Can't remember, 40 years ago. So then I went into radio for 25 years after that. Then I saw this picture.

Outer Space, Film Noir, and the Blues

Hello out there. Your Suburban Hermit here. A lovely day here in Northern California. Let's get random.

Hermits have time to be random.

Hi there. I'm James and I'll be your hermit today.  I already have a Substack for my writing , so this won't be that. This will be for all the random stuff I have also been posting there. About an hour ago I decided that the two should be severed from another, like a lost leg at Gettysburg.  There will be links for videos and music. Oddities of various kinds that I blunder into on Al Gore's internet.
